You had plenty of plans when your day off began.
Do the laundry, buy groceries, finally tidy that corner. Maybe take a walk if there was time.
By evening, though, the only thing you have cleared out is the pudding in the fridge. You pick up your phone and scroll past other people’s wonderfully productive days.
‘I did absolutely nothing today.’
When you start grading your day like that, here is a phrase worth remembering.
Today’s quote
Just being alive is pure profit.
A personal motto of Sanma Akashiya. Our translation from Japanese.
Japanese original: 生きてるだけで丸儲け
A motto that also named a place for laughter
Sanma Akashiya is a familiar face on Japanese television, and this is a motto he holds dear.
In an interview published in 2024, he explained that the name he gave IMM THEATER abbreviates this Japanese phrase. He also spoke about wanting a place where he could fully express the kind of comedy he loved in his own way.
‘Pure profit’ is an unexpectedly playful way to talk about life. Rather than a grand declaration that makes you sit up straighter, it has a ring that might let you smile and loosen your shoulders.
What follows is our own reflection on bringing that phrase into everyday life.
A day is more than a list of accomplishments
It is easy to turn a day into an inventory of results.
How many tasks did you finish? How useful were you? Did you get further than yesterday?
Getting things done can certainly feel good. But not completing your plans is not the same as the entire day being wasted.
You ate something warm. You watched a favorite show and laughed a little. You felt sleepy, so you lay down.
Those things might not fit neatly into an achievement report, but they were still part of your day.
Even a day when all you did was eat pudding leaves you with ‘That was good.’ At the very least, the pudding was rescued before its expiry date.
Borrowing Sanma’s phrase, perhaps we can be a little more generous when we balance the books each evening.
You do not have to turn every hardship into a joke
I would not want to use this motto to mean, ‘You are alive, so you have no right to struggle.’
Hard things are hard. When you are tired, you are tired. You do not have to force a laugh when you cannot find one.
Rather than telling someone else, ‘That should be enough to make you happy,’ we might quietly reach for these words when we are grading ourselves too harshly.
Keeping the phrase at that gentle distance may make it easier to welcome.
Tonight, finish without giving yourself a failing grade
‘I did nothing today.’
Even on an evening like that, perhaps you do not need to rush to add more goals for tomorrow.
The unfinished tasks can wait until tomorrow if they need to. Before then, you can stop short of giving yourself a failing grade for the day you have lived.
Not because you achieved something remarkable. Simply because you made it this far today.
Tonight, that may be enough to close the day.
